Beginner’s Guide to Styling Curls at Home (Indian Climate + Hard Water)

Styling curls at home can feel overwhelming, especially in India where humidity, hard water and pollution constantly interfere with curl definition. During my global education in textured hair, I realised that most international styling routines don’t translate well to Indian conditions. That’s why at The Alchemic Beauty, we created our signature way of cutting, colouring and treating curly and wavy hair, along with simple styling methods crafted specifically for Indian textures and weather.

Here’s a beginner-friendly routine you can follow at home:

1. Prep on soaking-wet hair
Curls love water — especially in India where hard water dries the hair out quickly. Apply your leave-in or curl cream on very wet hair to lock in moisture before the environment steals it away.

2. Use the right amount of product
Too little product = frizz.
Too much = weighed-down curls.
We teach clients how to find the perfect balance for their pattern, porosity and climate.

3. Choose a beginner-proof styling method
Raking, scrunching, wet plopping or using a Denman-style brush are all great starting points. The right method depends on your curl type and how much definition you want.

4. Dry with intention
Air-drying works for some, diffusing works better for others. In humid cities, a partial-diffuse method helps lock in shape before frizz forms.

Every styling plan we create is personalised because no two curls behave the same. At our salons in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Delhi, specialists demonstrate your ideal home routine step-by-step. And with our online booking system, you can schedule your curl appointment anytime.

Styling curls doesn’t have to be complicated — the right technique makes all the difference.
